NewsIan Tyson Records With Students From CAA
5/31/2010
In the spring of 2009, the school theme at Calgary Arts Academy was Choose to Make a Difference. Students learned of a golden eagle that had been shot and left for dead beside a gravel road near Lethbridge. The eagle was taken to the nearby Birds of Prey Centre and, as a result of his blindness from his injury, Spirit is totally reliant on humans and resides there permanently.
CAA students decided to hold a bake sale to raise money for Spirit, and to write a song to "cheer him up." Working with resident artist Cam Bourque, students wrote A Song For Spirit.
Calgary Arts Academy invited Spirit to the school and performed their song form him. The children's voices seemed to have a calming effect on the eagle as if he understood this was his song. Mr. Paul Rasporich, the Year 1-2 teacher who spearheaded this project, believed Canadian music legend Ian Tyson would really add something to the song. Paul contacted him and Mr. Tyson thought the song was both powerful and symbolic. He recorded A Song For Spirit with the Calgary Arts Academy Spirit Choir in April 2010 at the Beach Recording Studio in Calgary.
